Who is Professor Twang?

Professor Twang and the Honky Tonk Review is what happens when three college professors, a music librarian, a public school teacher, and one fearless drummer walk into a bar—and start a honky tonk band. Based somewhere between Greensboro, Graham, and Durham (basically wherever I-85 and I-40 gets confusing), they serve up classic country favorites and rowdy originals with brains, boots, and a whole lot of twang. Equal parts sawdust and syllabus, this is honky tonk with a GPA.

Professor Twang and the Honky Tonk Review is a high-energy honky tonk band rooted in North Carolina's rich musical soil, blending academic chops with pedal steel twang, telecaster fire, and witty songwriting. With members hailing from Greensboro, Graham, and Durham—right where Interstates 85 and 40 collide—the band brings classic country and original tunes to life with grit, heart, and a dash of scholarly flair.

The band formed in true serendipitous style when Dr. Mark Dillon (accordion/guitar/keyboard/vocals) exclaimed to fellow musician and UNC Greensboro colleague Billie Feather (banjo/guitar/bass/vocals), “Hey! The new head music librarian is a pedal steel player—and I know a killer Telecaster player!” Billie replied, “Well, my friend William just moved back to North Carolina from Houston!” Zac Lassiter came along for the ride and just like that, a honky tonk band was born.

The name Professor Twang and the Honky Tonk Review reflects the group’s musical and professional pedigree: three professors (Mark, William, and Billie), a head music librarian (Jeremy), and a dedicated public school music teacher (Robert). Together, they deliver a rollicking mix of classic honky tonk hits, dancehall staples, and boot-stomping originals that feel both timeless and fresh.

Catch them where the roads cross and the steel guitar sings—this is honky tonk with brains, amazing boots, and a whole lotta soul.  See you in class, and you’d better take notes!
